About:
I was born in Chicago before my family began its gradual descent to the south. We lived in Indiana, then North Carolina and finally settled in Texas. Currently, I reside in Austin and I’m an undergraduate student at UT, majoring in Anthropology with a focus in Asian studies. I became an anthropology major because I’m fascinated by how people construct their realities and how they perceive their environment. As a kid I likened myself to Harriet the Spy and was constantly observing the people around me. It's a great way to pass the time and pretend you're a spy, but becomes a little creepy after the age of eight. My fascination with people and cultural constructs (woops some collegiate lingo) has continued and now with my education, I want investigate and narrate. Very vague idea I know. But what drives me most in life is learning, challenging myself and serving others. We'll see what life has to bring, or what I can bring to my life.
Why I Ride
I am riding because of my mom, Janette Llaneza Nadesan. She passed away from breast cancer June 6, 1998 after three years of fighting through surgeries and chemotherapy. She carried an enormous burden everyday, striving to be more than a cancer patient and instead try everyday to be a mother and wife.
Every passing day increases the distance between us. I struggle to remember fragments of memories, smells, hugs, tears, and laughter. But more than sadness I am angry that with every passing day she becomes more forgotten, both her and her fight. In response, I refuse to let her memory be a causality of time and her death be another tragic statistic. To continue her fight and her memory and to prevent a child or parent from suffering from this loss, I ride for a cure.
