About: I was born here in Austin, Texas and always envisioned myself coming to college at UT. In fact, I was at UT before I was even born. This is because my parents met while working at UT and my mom was pregnant with me while she was here. Now that I’m here in person, I am a senior human biology premed major and I want to become an anesthesiologist.

I grew up with two younger sisters and my family and I have been going on road trips across America for as long as I can remember. Every summer we would go somewhere new such as exploring Washington D.C., hiking the Great Smoky Mountains, swimming in Lake Michigan, camping near Mt. Rushmore, and sight-seeing in California. The destinations were amazing, but what made it special were the drives to get there and stopping at random places on the way. I have a great appreciation for the environment and I am in awe of the beauty of this earth.

In addition to keeping this planet clean and protected, I also want to keep the people living on it protected. I want to give back to the community and spread awareness about cancer and hopefully make a difference in their lives. I want to educate people and I am motivated to start this journey and impact some lives. As the UT motto goes, “What starts here changes the world”.

Why I Ride

I ride for grandma and for my cousin Methanie. My grandma was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was in her 60’s and she had radiation therapy which got rid of the cancer. She beat it. She was a nurse and took a medical trip to Honduras through her church where she got very sick, but that didn’t stop her from delivering a baby. But then about ten years later her cancer came back. She went through a similar type therapy again and she had a partial removal of her breast. She fought so hard and was always so positive and still put other people first. She beat the cancer again. Not once did she let the disease discourage her from living her life. She even went sky-diving at age 76!

After a while she just got very sick and my cousin Methanie was taking care of her up until she passed away a couple years ago. Methanie is another strong woman in my family who always put herself before others. She was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and had to have a double mastectomy. Even when she was going through chemotherapy, she still smiled through it all. She is clear of cancer as of now and she is still living her life to the fullest. She goes camping, and takes care of her ranch, and she inspires our whole family every day. Now it is my turn to help her as she did for my grandma. I am extremely motivated to help bring awareness of cancer and educate people on the effects it can have. My grandma and Methanie have given me so much hope, and the fact that they don’t let the disease define them is so inspiring. I hope to share these stories to other people with cancer and give them hope that the cancer doesn’t always win and that it can be beat.
