About: I was born in Beijing and my parents relocated stateside with me just before I turned 1. I am the first person in my entire family to grow up in the United States. Since I skipped 1st grade, I was always the youngest one in school, but out of my siblings and cousins, I am the eldest; I am still learning how to be a responsible role model. I have been passionate about music since a young age: I have played piano for more than a decade and I am a soloist, accompanist, and lyricist. I recently started DJ’ing as a way to meet new people and share my love of music. I have also been involved with high school debate for more than 5 years as a competitor, captain, coach, judge, and program founder, and one of my most talented students has gone on to win the state championship. I love the competitive spirit of debate that also drives sports like Ultimate and basketball, and it is this same competitive spirit that led me to join Texas 4000. The battle against cancer is a vicious fight, and we all have a stake in it.
Why I Ride
I ride for my grandmother, who lost the fight against cancer. When I was little, my mother would often tell me stories about the hardships my grandmother endured and the patience and love she showed my family. She was a very hard worker; I recall a story about how she worked through the night to cut, sew, stitch, and break in shoes for the family. I don’t remember her very well, but I do remember her warm embrace and picking up snails in the rain as my mother and I left the hospital where she passed away. I’ll always wish I had a chance to know her better and make her proud of her first grandson.
I also ride for my mother, who has supported me in all aspects of my life. She was severely affected by my grandmother passing away, and she herself had an overactive thyroid removed to avoid thyroid cancer. My mother has always inspired me to explore the world, find things that I love, and fight for things I believe in. This one’s for you, mom.
