About:
I was born in Upland, California, but was quickly uprooted to Oklahoma, Washington State, and finally to Austin because of my father’s job. Here, I was able to establish close friendships while my father attended seminary school to become an Episcopalian priest. After he graduated, we moved to Sugar Land, Texas, where I began high school. After a difficult semester of not finding anyone to relate to, I was given the opportunity to move back to Austin and live with a friend’s family. My older sister also stayed in Austin, so I always had family near and a way to visit my parents often.
My parents moved again to Dayton, Texas while I graduated from high school and moved in with my sister to start college at UT. The whole family took an amazing vacation to London, Paris, and Vienna during the winter break of 2006. Since then, my sister has moved to England and my father and I have been able to visit her numerous times. Though my family is separated by distance, we stay close and talk often to provide each other with support and love.
I am in my fourth and final year at UT and am studying magazine reporting in the School of Journalism. I attribute my decent grades to good study habits mixed with lots of coffee. I am driven by a love for knowledge and a hope to get my money’s worth. My favorite things involve my beach cruiser, caffeine, music, dancing, and my friends. I will graduate this year, but I hope to never stop discovering new things.
Why I Ride
I have known the effects of cancer all my life. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer before I was born and was given 5 years to live at most. The doctors said it was impossible for her to bear children, but she proved them wrong. She had me, her “miracle child,” and lived an amazing life for another 20 years. I have seen her cancer go into remission, come back, spread, and cycle over again many times. I know what radiation, chemotherapy, and alternative medicines can do to the body. Most importantly, I know how faith and support are miracle workers that don’t cause any horrible side effects. I would love to do my part in spreading awareness as well as courage to others who are already aware and affected by cancer. I want people to know that whatever they’re going through, they’re not alone. I fully support funding for cancer research, and I would like others to know why it is important that we find answers in how to cure a disease that is claiming so many of our loved ones.
