About:
I grew up as an only child in New Orleans, Louisiana. Since arriving in Austin, I’ve enjoyed the countless opportunities only Zilker Park, Barton Springs, UT, and this diverse landscape could bring. My only disappointment in choosing to study at UT is missing seeing my extended family (all twenty-seven first cousins) grow up back home these past couple years.
Camping with my family here in Texas and along the Gulf Coast has instilled in me a love of the outdoors. If it’s beach volleyball, rugby, or cycling, I’m in.
As far as my future is concerned, I see myself in a healthcare-related career in some fashion at some point. I’m not quite ready to commit to a specific path until I better understand the options open to me; as I like to believe most people a couple years into college feel. This world’s much too wide a place for me to have figured it out just yet.
Why I Ride
The two leading causes of death in this country, heart disease and cancer, claim over a million lives each year. Yet, in most cases they can both be prevented by making healthy, life-fulfilling choices such as moderating diet or sun exposure and getting consistent exercise.
Modern treatments offer great promise in the early detection and treatment of tumors, and I believe that supporting their development through legislative action and sufficient funding is imperative. However, the immediate reality is that information is the average person’s best weapon in combating the onset of the disease. Texas 4000 takes upon that mantle by spreading awareness by both word and personal example.
I’ve been fortunate to have had only a single member of my extended family seriously threatened by cancer. Indeed, I was too young to remember witnessing my grandfather’s battle with prostate cancer. His jovial, positive spirit brought him through those struggles, and that same courage inspires me to undauntedly strive for not just treatment, but a cure.
