About:

I was born on Thanksgiving 20 years ago and have been a thankful Texan ever since. I have lived in Houston all my life until I moved away to live in Austin and study Human Biology at the University of Texas. After my first two years of living in Austin, I got even more adventurous and decided to go live in Italy this past summer. While there I took classes and improved my travelling skills. My experiences in Austin and especially living abroad have given me a greater understanding of myself and the ability to maintain an open mind to all cultures and people. I enjoy travelling and learning new things. I have always loved being outdoors and staying active. From yoga to kayaking I stay busy. I have played soccer for sixteen years, eight of which I have played competitive. I also have always loved running. Then there is bike riding which for me, has always been one of my favorite activities. I have always been interested in different places around the world and in all people. I think each of us has something to contribute to the world and to other people. Therefore, all my experiences have led to my enthusiasm for my next short term goal: to ride to Alaska for cancer. Riding my bike across the United States would not only be an adventure but also a chance to live my life to make a difference for the good of others. Giving my mind and body for a summer in the name of cancer would be an adventure and experience of a lifetime that could only make me a better person.

Why I Ride

Every year cancer affects 10 million more people. Cancer crosses all borders and social barriers. It is a universal and personal reality. Cancer reaches beyond the individual victims and their personal fight. There are different levels of fighting cancer. The battle takes individual strength and social support. An individual can battle cancer physically with their body. A friend can fight cancer emotionally watching his or her best friend fight cancer. Doctors battle cancer in surgery. Researcher’s combat cancer cells in a lab. Engineers fight cancer by developing new therapies and treatments. Every profession or person has fought cancer in one way or another. Successfully fighting cancer takes all of these diverse and specialized people and coming together. We all have this in common; none of us is safe from cancer. We have to take the mark cancer has left in our personal lives and direct that into actively fighting cancer together. This fight takes individuals, communities, and personal action. This action involves public awareness and education about prevention and treatments. The community needs to provide it’s victims with a strong support system. In my point of view, fighting cancer is more than science. I believe in the social and public fight of cancer. I spent a semester doing cancer research in a lab. I do not want to look at the cancer cells under a microscope anymore. Now I want to get out and meet the people affected by cancer and make an active difference socially. I want to fight cancer alongside with other people, and I believe together all of us can make a difference.
