About:
I grew up in Houston (but really, Cypress) and spent my college years in beautiful Austin graduating from the University of Texas.
I like teeth (I make dentures in a lab), ice cream (I'm a former Amy's Ice Cream-throwing employee), bicycles (I bike for AIDS and now cancer), 35 mm Mamiyaflex (awesome camera), and Moe (my burnt orange fish that digs trenches in the fish tank).
I am currently taking this year off before heading into graduate school. After biking throughout the western part of North America this summer, I will head out to the east coast to start dental school this fall. But until that day comes, I plan on taking over the world.
No, no. But I do plan on using all my energy to eradicate cancer from the universe.
Why I Ride
A hundred times a day I remind myself that my inner and outer lives are based on the labors of other people, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am still receiving. [Albert Einstein]
Einstein's wisdom on cooperation is the best life philosophy that I live by. In my own interpretation, it keeps me grounded and reminds me to do what I can for others. I have been blessed as a healthy individual so, in my understanding, I should assist those who have been affected by cancer or any other non-curable diseases. Texas 4000 is a way for me to do just that.
Biking my entire summer away is nothing compared to the precious lives that cancer takes away each year. Behind each disease lays a person, a family, a story. Being able to listen, to comprehend, and to empathize with someone is the best gift one can give and receive. The best way I know how to give this gift is by biking across the country and understanding the humanity behind this tormenting disease.
