About: I grew up in Seguin, Texas, about an hour south of Austin. I'm a second year at UT and just switched my major to Applied Mathematics, which was probably both a wise and insane move if you can imagine that.
I finally got my hands on a road bike this summer. I'd like to say that I didn't get into cycling just because Lance is a cycling god in Texas, but, that's probably not true. I know I've wanted a road bike for some time, but following Lance and hearing his awe-inspiring story pushed me over the edge (getting a credit card also helped). I'm not naturally athletic, but that just makes everything more fun and challenging now doesn't it? After all, if this ride wasn't going to be hard, I'd challenge myself elsewhere, like a summer job cooped up indoors with air-conditioning--how scary.

Why I Ride

I love my dad. He just turned fifty-five, and has already had two heart attacks. The sad part is that those heart attacks could have been avoided if he would abandon his bad habits and live a healthier life. In fact, just recently he had to go to a hospital in San Antonio to get two more splints placed in his heart. I know how it feels to have a sick dad, but I cannot fathom what it must be like to be diagnosed with a disease that really isn't a result of your own bad habits. I am lucky. I haven't had to witness someone I'm really close to suffer from cancer, but I'm sure I will someday. And this is why I want to go on this ride. Cancer affects everyone at some point in our lives. If telling someone about cancer detection might someday save their life, I'm willing to do it. If there's any way I can raise money to help fight
cancer, I'll do that too. If there's some way to encourage cancer victims and give them a new-found hope, I'll be there. And, since going on the Texas 4000 will do all of these things, hell yeah, count me in.
