Welcoming the TEXAS 4000 Cyclists

In an event that is free and open to the public, the Shreveport Water Works Museum (142 N. Common St.) will host a reception for the TEXAS 4000 cyclists on Saturday, June 8, 1 – 3 p.m.

All local cycling enthusiasts and supporters of local charity and optimism are encouraged to join in welcoming the TEXAS 4000 cycling team as they embark on the longest charity ride in the world.

On Sunday June 8, en route to Anchorage, Alaska from Austin, Texas, one third of the TEXAS 4000 Team: the Ozarks Route members, will ride through and take a break at the Shreveport Water Works Museum in downtown Shreveport. The cyclist team will make a short presentation about their cause and why they ride, sharing information about their charitable efforts to fight cancer. The presentation will be followed by live acoustic music from the Street Rats String Band and Trash Can Jinga. Lagniappe Catering will also be serving up some delicious chicken sausage jambalaya, and GoGreenly, fresh vegetarian hors d’oeuvres, for as long as supplies last.

“TEXAS 4000 is a community of cancer fighters. Our riders, all University of Texas students, are the passionate young people at the heart of the organization. They train, fundraise, educate, and bring hope to those with cancer.”

In its tenth year, the 2014 TEXAS 4000 riders have already raised over $525,000 for the fight against cancer. This will be the team’s first stop in the city of Shreveport.

By bringing attention to the fight against cancer, fundraising for the TEXAS 4000 for Cancer and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, event will raise awareness of the many local cancer centers located in Shreveport, including Christus Schumpert Cancer Treatment Center, Feist-Weiller Cancer Center and the LSU Health Science Center. Local cancer research projects and centers are eligible to apply for funds raised by the TEXAS 4000′s charity cycling event.

The event has been organized in large part by a collective group of fellow cycling enthusiasts. Participating volunteers include members from many of the local cycling clubs and groups, including: LOCO (Louisiana Off-Road Cycling Organization), Team LaS’port, Shreveport Bike Club, SBC Bike Social, and Sunrise Triathlon Club. Other participants include members of ABetterShreveport and You Know Me, which advocate locally for bicycle safety, bike lanes, and among other great causes, a generally bicycle-friendly city.
