My father is an Orthopaedic Oncologist, or a doctor that treats cancer of the
musculoskeletal system. Because of this I have seen and heard of the terrible
effects of cancer for my entire life. Growing up I heard all sorts of horrible
stories from my father about having to amputate children's limbs because of
inoperable tumors, having to put people through the excruciating pain of
chemotherapy, having to inform parents that a tumor had claimed their child's
life, and many other stories of people suffering terribly because of cancer.
Also, I heard stories of the tremendous faith and strength of individuals who
refused to allow the terrible disease to claim their lives. In addition to
this exposure I've also had a handful of encounters with family friends and
relatives who were faced with cancer themselves, all of which made me poised
to jump at an opportunity that would allow me to lend my hand in the fight
against cancer and in supporting those unfortunate people who must fight the
illness themselves. I am proud to be a part of a cause that is committed to
sharing hope and awareness in the worldwide effort to overcome cancer.
