Personal Statement
For many students, summer is a time of freedom, a time when they can wake up at noon, relax all day, and party all night. No obligations. No restraints. However, at the end of that summer, what have these people gained? Sure, they may not have had any stressful, painful times, but they also haven't had anything that they can look back upon and say, "I'm really glad I did THIS specific thing."
For too long I was one of these types of people, wasting my summers away and not realizing that I really didn't achieve anything until it was too late.
This year I decided to change. This experience will be about much more than improving myself, however. While I certainly imagine that a fair amount of self-improvement will take place, this ride is much more about selflessness. It is about opening the eyes of those blind to the perils of cancer. It is about spreading knowledge so that someone's mother, brother, teacher, or friend may be able to avoid developing cancer altogether. But most importantly, it is about spreading hope to those already affected by this terrible affliction. This is why I ride.
