Biography
As the youngest of three and the daughter of a wildlife biologist/wildland fire fighter my life has not had many dull moments. From pet raccoons and hybrid crocodiles to exploring bat caves at an early age, I developed a love for science that was nurtured by my mom. I have also been instilled with a love for adventure, life, family, and friends. I love running, biking, and outdoor activities in general, but running will always been my passion. I have run a half marathon and currently rowing for the UT novice rowing team. Some have described me as an endorphin junkie-I disagree, maybe I am still in the denial phase. I am currently a first year exercise science major and hope to have a career in the medical field. I want to extend the benefits of medicine and fitness to people at all different fitness and health levels. I am always open to a challenge and adventure!
Personal Statement
Everyone has been or will be directly or indirectly affected by cancer, in their lifetime. While this disease is overwhelmingly devastating it seems to bring out the good in people. From the patients to families and doctors hope seems to be the continuous theme. I believe cancer should be fought through science as well as through human connections. Medicine will treat the disease, but caring and compassionate people will make healing possible.
I ride for my mom. She has cancer of the t-cells of the skin. This is a rare form of cancer with little to no research in causes and treatments. While this form of cancer is not malignant, its potential to spreads to the lymphatic system makes it a difficult and scary unknown. My mom is the most important person in my life. She raised three children as a single parent while going back to school and working full time. I cannot express enough the deep admiration and love that I have for my mom. I also ride for my grandfather, Paco, who lost his battle to brain cancer, but kept a smile and everyone laughing until the end.
