Personal Statement

Cancer is not something that any of its victims ask for. It is a disease that attacks an individual blindly and can affect every aspect of his/her life. It is extremely difficult to deal with and is not only a burden for the infected individual but also to his/her friends and family. It can ruin families and tear friends apart. One of the most difficult parts about cancer is that it is not entirely treatable. It is amazing how far we have come in the scientific and medical fields; however, there are sill thousands who suffer from cancer and the side effects that accompanies it.

As someone who is healthy and active, I see it as my duty to help those who are in need. It is a battle for those infected to win; but it is not one that he/she has to fight alone. Through research it is only a matter of time before cures or at least advancements will be made in winning this battle. But this research is extremely expensive and needs funding. Through programs such as Texas 4000, Race for the Cure and Ride for the Roses, the necessary awareness and funding is being provided to fight cancer and to assist those currently inflicted. It is a long road and not something that will happen quickly. But even the small steps are a steps in the right direction.
