About: Hello, my name is Madhushree Zope! I was born in Jalgaon, India lived there for a while before moving to Kuwait and then to America. My family (my parents and younger brother) has spent 14 years in Houston since then. We moved around a lot in those years, and I spent less than 3 years at each school before I attended UT. Some other things you should know about me: I love traveling, experiencing new cultures, trying out new eateries, visiting museums, watching plays and musicals, and being outdoors.

I am currently majoring in Biochemistry and am also interested in public health. I am also an avid researcher and much of my time is spent, if not in class or with my friends, in the laboratory. My research is mostly aimed at developing new cancer therapies and being a part of Texas4000 will be yet another way for me to join the fight against cancer. I also hope to attend medical school and maybe find some time to travel abroad as well.

Why I Ride

I can still vividly remember when my oncologist announced my diagnosis to my family. It happened right after my first day of high school. What struck me the most in the following months was not the physical shock from chemotherapy, but the emotional growth that I underwent. Amidst the tears and fatigue, I was able to witness the amazing kindness and sacrifices of my family, friends, and doctors. These people inspired me to become what I am today and to dedicate my life to fight for a cure.

I ride for the cancer patients I have come across in my time at the hospital. I ride to give them hope. I ride to remember those who have passed. I ride for all my attending physicians, especially my oncologist, who constantly made my family smile and inspired me to pursue a career in medicine. I ride for the nurses that took care of me and made me laugh every day. I ride for my friends who have been there for me and for my teammates. I ride for my teachers and mentors who supported my dreams and taught me to believe in myself.

I ride for all the caregivers out there who have stood by their loved ones, immovable and unyielding.

I ride for my parents and my brother. I am infinitely grateful for their strength and perseverance throughout my battle with cancer and throughout my life.

I ride in hopes that one day we will triumph against this disease.
