About: My name is Nate Roberts and I was born in Austin, Texas. I have lived in Austin my entire life and now while going to college here I have started to realize how this city has shaped me. This city that feels like a small town has so many things to offer from the fields and trails of Zilker that grew my appreciation for the outdoors to the to the music and art of its many festivals that exposed me to new cultures and perspectives. Every day I challenge myself to expand my horizons, much like Austin’s skyline, by trying something outside of my comfort zone. I don’t think it’s living if a person is comfortable all of the time and never experiences anything that scares them a little.

When I came to the university, I chose Chemical Engineering as my major. I knew it was going to be tough, but I also never wanted to stop learning about the properties of the world in which we live. I also involved myself in organizations on campus that I thought would help me meet new and interesting people that knew about vastly different subjects than me so that I could learn things that I would never see in any of my classes. These choices have led me to join mentoring organizations such as Camp Texas and FIG and engineering groups as well such as ChemE Car. Taking every opportunity to live a life full of unique experiences has led me to where I am today, but I’m still trying to postpone the day I face the thing that makes me the most uncomfortable: moving out of Austin.

Why I Ride

I put a lot of thought into the qualities and characteristics I have inherited from my parents, and the almost-necessity to put aside anything and rush to the support of a friend is the sensation that I proudly say came from my mother. Unfortunately I cannot count the number of times that she has been the one cooking another family’s meals, because a parent was either too sick or in the hospital. She visits her hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska on a monthly basis taking anywhere from a few days to a week to take care of her mother who had a stroke and give her sister who lives there some time for herself. She is the friend and family that you would go to with any problem knowing she would make time to help in any way she could.

I hope that someday I can provide my friends and family with at least half of the love and care that my mom gives every day. She always keeps a smile on her face and has something soothing to say no matter the situation and I honestly have no idea how she does it sometimes. Two of our close family friends have experienced the horrors of cancer and she opened our home to them when they needed it. Even when hearing their terrible diagnosis her demeanor was always positive and her smile never faded.

I ride for my mother so that I can work towards erasing one more problem from this world so that she can have one less meal to make and one less heartbreak to hide behind a smile.
