FAQ

ABOUT TEXAS 4000
Q. When did Texas 4000 begin?

A. Our journey will take approximately 70 days. We will average nearly 80 miles per day; some days being longer, some days being shorter.

ABOUT DONATING
Q. What percentage of the money I donate actually goes towards cancer research?
A. Texas 4000 is 100% committed to the fight against cancer. Throughout the duration of our trip, we strive to keep all operational costs, such as food and shelter, at an absolute minimum. Thankfully, through the unbelievable generosity of our hosts, we aren't left completely without luxury during our trip; but, if necessary, we will sleep in tents and eat peanut butter sandwiches... By minimizing trip expenses, we can donate more money to cancer research – which makes us happier than warm beds, nice food, and a hot shower ever could.

As well, as Texas 4000 has grown, we have been very fortunate to acquire some very generous sponsors; our partnership with Sense Corp being the prime example. One of their goals is to contribute enough money to Texas 4000 to fully cover all operational expenses, thus making me proud to say that nearly all of your donation will go towards cancer research.

Q. Why the American Cancer Society?
A. The American Cancer Society (ACS) has perhaps been the largest spearhead for the fight against cancer. Since 1946 ACS has invested over 2.5 billion dollars in cancer research grants. Among the ranks of recipients have been 40 Nobel Laureates. ACS funded the study which linked smoking to cancer in 1954, and have since taken the lead in eliminating advertising for smoking and tobacco. They have worked to make the Pap smear an accepted form of cervical cancer detection, working on legislation for Medicare to cover the cost, and as a result the mortality rate has fallen 70%. The 5 year survival rate of people diagnosed with cancer has improved from about 38% in 1960 to 62% in 1999.

The Society not only funds research, but also works with outreach. They sponsor programs which counsel people in different areas that will affect their lives now that they are dealing with cancer. There are financial workshops, support groups and programs that help to rebuild self image after the effects of cancer treatments. There are two camps offered for children who are either battling cancer or who are in remission. These are free of charge to the families and provide kids the chance to relate to others who can understand what they are going through. There are many more programs offered by ACS, their web site can be found at www.cancer.org/docroot/home/index.asp .
