Day 65: Beaver Creek to Northway

Everyone awoke to the excitement of a border race. I had my game face on and ate breakfast silently. I really felt that I had a chance to win and took it very seriously. Before starting we decided to run with Rockies against Sierras. We had our top 10 against theirs for men and our top 7 against theirs for women. We would pick a winner by awarding 20 for first, 19 for second and so forth for men and 14 for first, 13 for second, and so forth for women. The highest score would win.

We waited so those not racing could reach the finish line before us and then began ourselves. The men ran at about 15 mph or so. The large group meant that there was a lot of drafting. The road surface was sketchy, but we all stayed rubber side up. With 10 of 14 miles I tried to lead a breakaway, but it didn't work.

With 2 miles left, the pace started to pick up. We all jostled for position. The finish line came into view and I sprinted into the lead. Gabe had a bit more steam and he won with me coming in just behind.

The women were not as lucky and several fell and were injured. Without the whole team, we had to leave border pictures to another time. I left early and got a ride through construction. As such, the rest of the team had to sag and only me and a few others got to ride the whole distance.

Our campsite was absolutely crawling with mosquitoes. Joel helped by cooking a huge dinner and Dan helped by buying beer.
