by Samuel Kutscha Aug 14, 2010 I awoke to find that my tent was not really rain proof. My ground pad kept me above the worst, but most of my possessions were wet. Kelly was kind enough to bring me my rain gear. The rain made it hard to pack but everyone got it done with good spirits. I started a fire in a cast iron stove to heat everyone up and dry some clothes. I put my helmet to close and by the time I checked it was melted. The trailers had left so I sagged to the first rest stop. I arrived to find the trailer van stuck in the gravel by the side of the road. We decided to remove the trailer to make it easier to unstick, but when we tried to lower to trailer jack we found that it was broken. I diagnosed the problem as a broken dowel pin and manufactured a new own out of a screw. it held long enough to unhook the trailer. We got it out of the gravel by putting the floor mats under the tires to get more traction. We then backed it up to the trailer and pulled the whole thing free. The trailer jack broke again so we simply removed it. I took the last 30 miles easy in anticipation of the border race. The campsite was nice but mosquito infested. I did some laundry and mentally prepared to race.
