A Note on Panhandling

Those of you who have never stood on a street corner begging for money might find this one enlightening.

I, personally, have never stood on a street corner begging for money. Erm. Until I joined T4k, that is. Nowadays, most of my Cancer Killin' donation money comes from complete strangers I have split-second conversations with while stealing glances at the traffic signal to avoid death by motorcar.

A few observations;

a.) There are a LOT of cars on this planet. (Picture it. Now quadruple that picture. You're still not close.)

b.) People do some RIDICULOUS things while driving. The least of which is texting. For the sake of all that is good, please. please. put the thing away and watch the road.

c.) there are few things that make you feel less significant than standing there with your cardboard sign, watching hundreds of people surge past you in hundreds of cars(we should all carpool, really)- many of whom are not only intent on ignoring you, but are flat out afraid of even glancing in your direction.

d.) there are few things in this world more uplifting than the one person of every hundred or so who smiles, maybe even rolls down their window and offers some words of luck or encouragement, or even a dollar or two. They may never know the extent of it, but they may have just made our day- despite the fact that they didn't have any cash on them. There's nothing like finding someone who supports you and your cause.

So thanks, strangers, for sharing your smiles, your starbucks money, your cupholder change, and your strength, and your stories. Every time I get on my bike, I carry you with me.
