by Jared Muston Feb 17, 2010 All good things must come to an end. I got my first flat Sunday morning. OK, no big deal. I kept saying, "I'm gonna make it to Alaska without getting a flat tire," but that was really just a bunch of noise. So Jordan and Porter helped me change my tube out, and we continued on our ride. I got another flat today. I wasn't even a mile from my house! (Although this shouldn't surprise me; I also got in my first and - knock on wood - only car wreck less than a block from my house.) It happened on Duval around 38th. I swear, somebody has literally dumped a bag of nails in the bike lane, because seven of us now have gotten flats in that area over the past couple weeks. Really?? The rest of my training was ruined today because of it. Of course I didn't have a spare on me because I had just replaced it Sunday, so what were the chances of me getting another flat today? Clearly much larger than I estimated. I had to go to the shop to buy new tubes because I can't for the life of me find where my spares are around the house and by the time I got back I didn't have enough time to go out before I had to be at work. At least I did some of the maintenance on my bike I've been meaning to do: retape the handle bars, attach the frame pump, tighten my brakes, blah blah blah. Work, however, provided some consolation. I drove out to Far West Rd. for a campaign fundraiser we hosted and discovered some of the most baller houses and beautiful views in Austin. Coupled with the killer hills in the area, I decided this would make a perfect route and want to ride it ASAP. I combined it with a couple other hilly rides I've done, and it should make for a pretty intense 45 miles. http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/tx/austin/603126647153436656 "I got this chrome on this Bugatti; I'm strong in this Bugatti Two V-8's - ain't no such thing as drivin' calm in this Bugatti" Lil Wayne - Swag Surfin'
