by Gabriel Cintron Jan 14, 2010 Last April I got into a cycling accident in which I fell off my bike and landed on my wrist. A week later I went to an orthopedist just to make sure nothing was broken. The orthopedist said I had a really bad sprain and just to lay off it for a couple of weeks. The pain in my wrist never subsided so I went to another orthopedist who specializes in wrists a couple of weeks ago. He took x rays and immediately upon looking at them concluded that I have broken my scaphoid bone and I would need surgery because the fracture was not taken care of sooner. He told me that I would have to have a bone graft (he would need to take some bone from my hip) as well as put some pins in my wrist. So many things began to race through my head. I’ve never had surgery. How would this affect my training? Am I going to be able to go on the ride this summer? I informed my doctor of my situation. We had a long discussion about how this would affect my training. Initially he thought I would be ready to ride this summer but I would not be able to ride until my cast was removed. We then talked about the need to keep my fitness up throughout the spring. After further consideration, he concluded that I can indeed ride even with my cast on. Yesterday was my surgery. The actual procedure went perfectly. I did have a bad reaction to the anesthesia though. I was feeling very nauseated when I woke up and couldn’t stop vomiting the rest of the day. The pain killers were contributing to my nausea so I can’t take any. I am feeling much better today though. I’m well on the road to recovery. I can’t wait to get on my bike again. This experience is bound to make the ride even more rewarding. P.S. This blog took a ridiculous amount of time to type with only my left hand :)
