Training Camp

We had training camp this past weekend and it was quite an experience! The camp was in a small town, of a population of less than 300, in Texas called Fayetteville. We arrived on Saturday morning and meet the 12 coaches. All of the coaches were great cyclists, some which are state champions. We were divided into 4 groups dependent on our skill level (I was in the NO RIDING experience group). Then, we went to a basic cyclist skills camp (avoiding obstacles, how to communicate while riding, stopping, etc.). In the skills camp I got some scratches and bruises since I fell multiple times when clipping in and out of the pedals.

Following, we did a 17.5 mile ride. For me this was particularly hard since I has never ride that long. As we were riding I noticed that all my teammates were passing me, but I kept on pedaling with company of one of the coaches and Michael, a 2009 T4K rider. As I was riding it became more real to me that we are RIDING TO ALASKA in order to spread knowledge, charity, and HOPE. I realized that I need to become a much better rider in order to have a safe trip. On Sunday, we had another group ride, of 3 hours, and I also far behind the pack most of the time… I reflect on why I am riding. I am riding for all the people that have put their faith in me and want to help in the battle against cancer, for my teammates that are putting their sweat, tears, and blood into T4K, and for all of those who have the disease.

The last day, the coaches recognize 1 rider in each of the 4 groups. In my group there were 2 people recognize... and I was one of them . As they said, I have a LONG way to go, but with my positive attitude and perseverance I would become a better rider.
