by Meg Merritt Jul 30, 2004 We are with Sierra now and having a great time in Whitehorse. They found us at the school that is hosting us and it was great seeing them. Today we have the day off in Whitehorse and so far I am enjoying the little town of 20,000. Mind you that the Yukon in its entirety only has 29,000 people so we're talking uptown to be in Whitehorse. The Yukon is full of active people. Every corner in Whitehorse has some hiking/kayaking/cycling store and the town is full of SUVs with roof racks- you know the type. I don't know how people could live here in the winter though- lots of ice-skating I suppose. I just stepped out of the cutest coffee shop that reminds me quite a bit of both the Flightpath and the Spiderhouse in Austin. Now I am in this bizarre-o internet/gaming place. We are staying at this state of the art Catholic Elementary School that impresses me quite a bit. Libby and I both did the Catholic Ed thing and laughed about the fact that while we are in the Yukon Territory; some things just don't change (in that we still feel that aura of - you better behave!) I can't believe this trip is almost over. I have seen, learned, and lived so much. I have learned quite a bit about myself and much of that could not have happened without the little knee setback. On the subject of knees- well, you should see me cycling. I am Slowly McSlowerson out there and it is indeed a challenge. My energy level is so high that I want to just ride till my cheeks are red. But I have two knees telling me, "No way Merritt! You go any faster and we are quitting." Don't you love how I narrate my mental conversations? It's just to let you guys know what it's like out there. Only a few days left and my twin knees can take a break. I just don't think anything can stop me now I am so excited about just enjoying these next few days. This team means so much to me and I want to cherish the short time we have together. India is getting closer and everyday I have to prepare myself for that journey while also thinking about finishing this one strong. I do miss everyone very much and can't wait to see you guys in Baton Rouge, NY, and London. Even when you're riding slow, life sure does go fast.
