by Martina Alvarez Jul 30, 2004 Whitehorse, YUKON THis is our first experience of civilization in a couple of weeks as well as our last larger town before hitting Anchorage. The past few weeks have been pines, aspens, rivers, mountains and a long road stretched before us. I`ve loved it (hence the lack of journal entries). To pass the time on the bike we have become dependent on name and number games. I also have picked up an addicting hobby of berry picking along the road. There are sascatoon berries, rasberries, wild strawberries and some fuzzy ones that taste really good. Another beautiful thing about being so far North is the ability to see the Northern Lights. Mix a rainbow and cloud and have it dance across the sky--that`s what it looks like--AMAZING. One last thing to share since time is short is that the Sierra route has officially joined up with us in Whitehorse. We had a reunion last night. It will be fun to take over the roads with 40 cyclists now :-) --I still have a few more people to touch on: Carly--she is a caring friend. She is aware to tend to me when i`m anxious. Sheis hardworking and a focused rider. Being a nutrition major she also makes sure food is kept to optimum standards. Tess--she has a fun loving personality and enjoys the simplest things in life. her classic line is ¨This is the best (insert NOUN) EVER¨ Brandon--I have much respect for this. He is short, to the point, and always seems to be able to look at things objectively. He`s also consistantly one of our strongest riders. Brett A.--He`s the man that spreads catchy one liners to our team. I had the priveleged to ride 210 miles with him on the chuck of road that our team drove over due to the gravel. We spent 14 hours on our saddles next to eachother--i was envious of his beloved Brooks saddle.
