by Eric Chen Aug 08, 2009 Today I ride for Mr. Ken McQuade's father, who passed of pancreatic cancer about 4 years ago. I met Mr. McQuade at the It's A Grind in Plano last summer as I was fundraising. He mentioned he was born in Juneau and actually is a UT Austin alum. I remember him being so excited about us biking through Whitehorse and the Yukon, as I recall it was like "being on the moon." Today I ride for him and his friends and family who have been affected by cancer. Wow! Today absolutely blew by. We rode 93 miles and it went by SO fast. It was great catching up with the Rockies team, and I spent nearly the entire day with Andrew. We talked about our toughest days and coolest things we saw, among other things. I got to hang back and talk to Edlin who shared with me her own story and the things she's learned along the trip. I'm so proud of her for her journey and grit and determination to ride. Few know that Edlin was actually signed up to ride in 2008, but due to a course of events (and I think by no coincidence) she ended up riding this year with the Rockies. The rest stops were definitely an exciting change of pace. After meeting up, certain traits about our Sierra team have arisen... namely, we hurry through rest stops more often, and consequently try to get to our destination more promptly. The Rockies like to take their time and hang out at the rest stops. At first we Sierras we a bit taken aback b/c we just aren't used to lingering around for so long--probably because we usually have somewhere to be or it's just so hot! Nevertheless, it was fun and refreshing. At our first rest stop, Sarmed, Susan D, and Carolina dressed as aboriginal "savages" running us down as we biked in, shovel in hand and all. All in all, today was a beautiful ride and I'm glad we are reunited again. Tonight we're sleeping in a recreation center, and it's a great chance for us to catch up some more. Indeed, the Yukon is vast and wide. It seems the trees run on forever, and I've lost count of the number of creeks and rivers our team has biked over. Until tomorrow... peace & love.
