Day Forty-four: Purden Lake to Prince George, BC (Last Hair Day)

Reporting from Prince George, here are some of the highlights for the day:

- A 40-mile day with rolling hills. We were all eager to get to Prince George and start our day off. Also, we have heard wonderful stories about the people there.

- I decided to follow the Rockies tradition and cut my hair in PG. To enjoy my hair for the last day, I rode with it down underneath my helmet. I thought it would annoy me, get stuck to my neck with sweat, and make me want to get rid of it, but it was actually not that bad. We had a blast on the road and took lots of pictures of hair.

- Susan D. comes up with the idea of playing a joke on Jeff (the sweep for the day.) The road we are cycling on is also known as the ‘Highway of Tears” because of the high number of incidences where women go missing. We were instructed in the morning to ride in big groups, even though the road is safe. We take off with the first group and set up the prank about 4 miles after the rest stop. The scene: Susan’s jersey, helmet, flowers, and bike (derailleur side down) on the gravel, all simulating a struggle to escape. We also leave a rock close and squirt it with ketchup (blood.) Our team said it was fairly believable except that it reeked like ketchup as soon as you approached the “crime scene.” At least we got a good laugh out of it.

- Cycled into a local bike shop, where we met Dorrie and Dave. They are amazing! She gives us a warm welcome to PG with lunch and fresh fruit. Plus, we can leave our bikes at the bike shop and get them worked on.

- Dorrie and Prince George have hosted both Rockies and Sierra teams since 2005, so they know exactly what the team needs. She sets us up with goodie bags and lots and lots of food. Most of the team is staying at the community center, but there is the option to stay with some hosts. Emily, Audrey, and I jump on it. Why turn down meeting amazing people? Audrey gets to stay with Wendy and Rich while Emily and myself head home with Dorrie and Dave.

- After getting cleaned up and hanging out for a while, we head over to Wendy and Rich’s place for a potluck dinner. Everybody is there and is having a great time. I eat till I am stuffed and sit on the couch for a while. The conversations with our hosts and the locals were really good; I feel extremely happy.

- Finally, hair cut time rolls around. It is a Rockies tradition that Dorrie cuts the team’s hair. Of course, not everyone is interested in getting a hair cut. Some of the boys get crazy haircuts (mohawks, uncle cuts, fohawks) and some of the girls get trims. It was really fun. I took so many pictures that my camera ran out of batteries (which was a good thing cause I just got to enjoy afterwards.)

- After a watching a little bit of the Tour de France (which Wendy recorded for us) we head home. I was exhausted. It was such an amazing day.
