Vancouver

We started the day off right with a big breakfast at a church in Mt. Vernon. Our luck with the weather is still holding out, becuase it started raining just after we started eating, and the rain stopped just before it was time to leave. Good thing, because the morning was a little chilly and the van was gone with all our rain gear (Tommy had already to drive it back to Seattle to get trailer tires and pick up the trailer).

The ride to the Canadian border was pretty uneventful, and we didn't have any trouble crossing the border -- I didn't even have to show my ID. We ate lunch in a park near Customs, and then I took off with a group of about six people.

We've heard all about how Canadians tend to be very nice people, but one of our first experiences on the road in Canada was to have a guy shout "Get off the road!" and give us the finger as he drove by. Maybe he was an American.

Just before the border, we saw a sign saying that Vancouver was 39 miles away; we were already around mile 57 of riding, so our nice 60 to 80 mile day turned into a century (or close to it).

Once we started getting close to the city, everyone in the group was getting anxious to get in and find our lodging, so the pace was pretty high. I decided that I was exhausted and wanted to take it easy, so I let myself get dropped. I had a little map of the city that I got at the border, and I figured it would be fun to navigate the city on my own (no arguing about directions!)

I rolled up to the University of British Columbia and started randomly riding around campus, since nobody knew exactly where we were staying. As luck would have it, I found Mike and Paul hanging out on a patch of grass almost immediately.

I'm on a public computer at U. BC right now. I suppose I'll head back over to the dorm and find something to do.
