Day 22 - Rachel to Tonopah (109 mi)

The superbowl of the Sierra route… 109 miles, and I sagged it. Waking up this morning, I was definitely bittersweet about sagging while my teammates faced one of the toughest and longest obstacles of the summer—riding through the blistering desert for 109 miles. Nevertheless, I was scheduled to sag today and I tried my best to make sure my teammates had the best possible 109 miles they could have. Rather than setting up rest stops every 20 miles, we knocked the mileage down to every 15 so everyone could stay hydrated. With four of us, Daniel, Mike, Rich, and myself, this sag was still particularly tiring (not nearly as tiring as biking I imagine though). We had no cell reception as we biked through the desert to Tonopah (a former silver mining town) so a van had to stay back with the last rider to ensure nothing went wrong. I’m proud of my teammates for their strong performance, and we rode into Tonopah at about 5:00pm today. As soon as they pulled in, we started preparing dinner for them: chicken and broccoli stir fry over rice, with a side salad. Tasty. After the sags finished serving, eating, cleaning, and repacking the trailer, it was already 9pm. I hit the showers and went to the nearby McDonalds where some of us treated ourselves to a milkshake and french fries. That was great. Tomorrow we ride to California! I’m excited that we’ve made it this far, and I thank you guys for your support. I didn’t take many pictures today, but here are some of the moments I share with my team off of the bike.
