by Michael McAllaster Jun 28, 2009 4:00 AM- Wake up time. 90 mile ride ahead of us. The headwind yesterday averaged 30mph. Folks from Medicine Bow tell us that the wind is calm before 10 AM so we try leave to church by 6:00 AM. 4:30 AM- I'm tired it's still too early. 5:15 AM- Breakfast. I grab a coffee and bagel with cream cheese. 5:30 AM- Greg reads a letter from a family friend in regards to Sammy. Sammy passed away from cancer recently. I cry several times during the reading of the letter. I head outside and watch the sunrise and help Sarmed pack the trailer. 6:00 AM- Ride dedication. Many people ride for Sammy. 6:04 AM- Hit the road. 7:30 AM- 20 miles under our belts. I'm riding with Ben Baron and Ben Atkins. We make excellent time. Average about 16 mph leading to the firs rest stop. Knees hurt in the cold. Courtney Sommerville wears a diaper at the rest stop and I crack up laughing. 9:00 AM- 40 miles under our belt. Still no wind. Ben, Ben, and I ride at 20mph for the last 20 miles. My knees hurt a little. The countryside is beautiful and I take several pictures. 9:15 AM- Jeff joins our group and we hit the road. 10:00 AM- We move really fast to the next rest stop. 20 miles in 45 minutes. A few hills give me some trouble and I think of Sammy to help me through it. 10:30 AM- Leave the rest stop after a spaghetti sandwich and some chips. Still no wind. We really lucked out. The day before was impossible at this point. 11:45 AM- Hit the 80 mile rest stop. This morning went by fast. We grab a bite and a nap. 10 miles left until arrive in Casper, WY. The rest of the team arrives and then we leave. 1:00 PM- Bikes in storage and we head to the host house. Lucked out today with not much wind. Sammy was on my mind all day.
