by Eric Chen Jun 19, 2009 "Jia You!” Literally translated to: “Add Oil” Finally, some time to continue my blogging! Today, Max and I stayed with a Mr. Art Meyer, marathon runner, musician, and father of three. Thank you for your hospitality, Art! We kicked off the morning with a presentation at the Connely Hospitality House, a housing facility for those with family undergoing cancer treatment at the hospital. The response was great, and they were all very supportive of our cause.
We then began our ride, and soon ended up in the Navajo Indian Reservationn--an absolutely beautiful region.
To our left we saw the Shiprock, which to the Navajo is apparently a very sanctified monument to their spiritual beliefs.
Soon, we crossed the border from New Mexico into Arizona, and the valley which followed was absolutely gorgeous.
I vividly recall praising God at the top of my lungs for His creation, and yet, the winds were so strong, I could barely hear myself. I was just floored by the beauty of these mountains.
For the rest of the ride, our team faced strong but bearable headwinds for a good 40 miles into Mexican Water (a trade post consisting of a gas station, convenience store, and restaurant). Nevertheless, after facing these headwinds for a few hours, we were blessed with one of the most beautiful sunsets I've seen to date. A nearly 4 mile long downhill to our stop, with the sun setting in front of us and the weather beginning to cool.
(My teammate Bryn)
A long but rewarding ride--we made it Mexican Water and was greeted by some delicious spaghetti made by our sag drivers. That night we camped beneath the stars. Indeed there is no better way to see the US than on a bike.
