by Eric Chen Jun 13, 2009 Today I rode for Vanetta Anderson and Lois Saks, mothers of two of our Air Force guys we met in Clovis. They are such kind people, and I’m so glad I had the chance to meet with them.
Today’s ride was definitely tougher than most are for me. We faced strong headwinds all the way to Fort Sumner; good training, I suppose. Today I swept, which means I stayed at the very end to make sure no stragglers are left alone and behind. That was actually a pretty smooth job, as most of my teammates are at about the same speed now. I realized that there is something rewarding about riding in the back. In many ways, doing so gives you the opportunity to ENCOURAGE and push/strengthen your teammates. Riding alone is a discouraging experience so I’m glad I had the chance to sweep today. Tonight we’re staying at a church in Fort Sumner (the burial grounds for the notorious Billy the Kid). The people in town are particularly friendly, and I think one of the residents mentioned they only had around a thousand people. Nevertheless, we had a good time. The night sky is beautiful! Tomorrow I drive the sag vehicle with Daniel and Kathryn, and I must say that this is a welcomed physical break from riding. My bottom is so thankful, as today was the worst of my saddle sores to date! WE arrive in Albuquerque in two days and we’ll finally have our first rest day. I still love my team, and I have no question that I made the right route decision. Keep in touch! I’ve been taking lots of pics and I will be posting them soon. P.S. If you want me to send you a post card, email me your mailing address at ericbrianchen@gmail.com. Thanks again for your support!
