by Emily Sawtelle Jun 08, 2009 Winters was an amazing place to stay. We arrived and got to swim in the community pool and were then provided hamburgers for dinner by our hosts. After dinner we split into groups and went to individual host's homes. I went with Sheila, Brynn, Sarah, Jenna, and Jamille to Kay Guy's house. Kay is a super mom and grandma, with 6 kids and 12 grandchildren. She made us feel like part of her big family and took us to the grocery store to get snacks and things for breakfast. She shared her experience with cancer almost immediately after we came into her home. She lost her husband, JB, to pancreatic cancer several years ago and it was a real blow to the family. Her youngest daughter was able to have her dad walk her down the aisle on her wedding day, although they lost him only 8 months after his diagnosis. I love bonding with my team and making strong friendships, but the best part of the trip so far has been the relationships we create with our hosts who so graciously take us in. Rides have already been really hard, like when I was still battling that stomach bug and trying to ride, but the people we meet are so loving that it really does keep us going.
