by Eric Chen Jun 07, 2009 “You are going to be driven by your friends and family members that spurred your interest into Texas 4000 in the first place. All of these people through you, are the ones turning the cranks. As you shed tears of pain on climbs and joy on descents, seeing the most beautiful things you’ve ever laid eyes on, you are going to wish every one of them was right there with you to see it all. Just remember that they are. “ -Daniel Culotta – 08 rider I write this as I finish my 1st day. I’m laying in my sleeping bag on the floor of our host family at the Texas Legato winery in Lampasas, Texas. Today in general was an eventful and action packed day; we woke up at 6 am for our gym and got ready to ride at 8. Chris, Nick, and Wilson came to see me off. The whole experience was very surreal, even the ride. I can’t believe this is really happening! I don thtink it’s yet become real to us yet. Nearly 400 people came to the ATLAS ride today and the ride itself was light and easy. Adrenaline was pumping, and I got to spend some quality time with my Rockies teammate, Andrew. We biked through fields of yellow and purple flowers—so flat that you can see out for miles. It was great to see some friendly faces as well (including coach Kevin Ferdinand who coached us when we first got our bikes). When we pulled into the end, we were greeted with a live band, BBQ, and cold beverages to cool down through. It was nice also to see my aunt, uncle, and parents for the last time until I reach Anchorage. After the party ended, we chatted with some of the 08 riders and they shared with us their experiences by way of a letter--so many kind words of wisdom and encouragement from them, including the above quote. I don’t know what to expect from here on out. I’m excited to see how this experience will change my life and the things I will learn about life, food, and myself through it. I’ll just have to remember to take it slow and take it all in. Carpe diem. Until tomorrow.
