by Meg Merritt Jul 10, 2004 Calgary is one of the world's best kept secrets. What a great city! Quick History- when I was in high school, I spent a summer in Nova Scotia for a French Immersion Program. While there, I found a very good friend in fun-lovin Shannon Rostrup who is from Edmonton, Alberta. So Shan drove down to Calgary so we could party it up at the Calgary Stampede while the team is in this weekend. So last night she and her two brothers took me to this great bar called COWBOYS that had a 1,000 person tent especially for STAMPEDE weekend. I must say I was impressed- the Canadians can have a good time! Stampede is the biggest annual event in Calgary, and as a Mardi Gras go-er, I can say this thing is huge. Not as crazy as Mardi Gras, but just as big of a deal. Today we went to China town for lunch and shopped around. In many ways, (Calgary being somewhat of a college town also) I am reminded of Austin when I am here. The team is doing great. We are getting stronger mentally and physically. They really get me through the tough days . Last Tuesday, we were en route to Glacier National Park, which is the best National Park I've seen yet, when 40 mph winds hit us. We'd been fighting wind and climbing hills all day and I was getting sooooooo tired. The last thirty miles were tretcherous. I was just about to cry; my knees were killing me, I had gotten little sleep, so I just kept trying to remember alll those we were riding for. No food, no caffeine could make me feel better. It wasn't until Paul, Lorig, and Bredt turned around and pulled me through those last couple of hills that I realized just how good they are to me. It occured to me that while I am doing a huge journey on a bike. I absolutely could not do it without my team. So now the coldest and "roughest" part of our journey encroaches. Sparse populations after Banff and different resource base to get used to will be a new challenge for us. One month left with very little internet access also...so expect us to be a bit behind on journal entries and pictures, but know that we are doing well. Wish us luck!
