Day 32: to Richardson Grove S.P.

Today we tackled the dreaded "Leggett's pass." It was a beautiful climb: tough, but entirely enjoyable. I've really learned to love the up-hills, I suppose because it feels like positive progress. I like the resistance. Also, today was the first day that we really saw any smoke from the wildfires, though I didn't really feel it have much of an effect on me. The last 30 miles were a bit rough due to the intense heat once we descended into the valley. And, I noticed that my hand had swelled to an unusually large size, so by the time I finally reached the park, Mr. Culotta had to drive me to the nearest clinic 10 miles away. Which was really unfortunate because the park, nestled in the Redwood forest, would have made for some incredible exploring. So, while everyone else was swimming in the cool mountain stream with amber sunlight filtering through the trees, I was lying on the doctor's examination table. Though, I know that it was necessary, and while I was there I got to talk to some of the nurses and other patients about our cause and their experiences with cancer. Also while I was detained, Mr. Culotta managed to finagle us some free pizza that we would have to come back to Garberville after we returned to camp and showered. The night ended on a high note with Mr. Culotta, Todd, Ben Bass, and I enjoying pizza at a little italian dive and watching stage 4 of the Tour Du France.
