riding with the penguins

First journal entry of the tour. And still there are about 8 months until the journey. Weather here in upstate NY is starting to take a turn for the worst. Today it has rained. And hasn't stopped. My bike leans against an old treadmill that I'll likely be using in the coming months. The rear tire is flat, and one of my panniers hangs from the rack with the memory of my last ride, a dismal 12 miler into the country. This is the same bike I rode Plea for Peace on, and also my trip to Chicago nearly two months ago. It has taken me nearly 2,400 total miles, but this time she'll stay home when I get shipped out to Austin, flying inside the big bird.

Everyone at home has been super supportive of the trip so far. My mother is selling raffle tickets at her beauty salon for products that were donated by the company. My grandmother is making an afghan to raffle off. My friend's father is helping plan a chicken bbq. My father and uncle are prepared to make considerable donations. Things are falling into place nicely. I am very thankful to have a family who shows enthusiasm toward my random tasks. Even if at first they don't think altering my life for a bike ride is a good idea, they always come around and give me support and, most importantly, love.

This has been my first journal entry. I hope everyone is feeling good about the ride. I'm excited to meet everyone. Until next time, stay hydrated out there in that Texas weather.

Big hearts,

shawn
